Did you know that February is National Children’s Dental Health Month? As a result, we have decided to take a moment to provide our patients with a quick refresher regarding some helpful ways to protect your child’s oral health. Whether you feel like you have reached an expert level of maintaining your little one’s smile – or if you are more than happy to receive a helpful tip or two – reviewing the basics is always beneficial for everyone!

Tip #1: Practice Great Care At Home

Your child’s oral health depends heavily on what you are doing at home. Brushing twice a day and flossing once every day are essential for remaining on the path toward excellent oral health (and cavity avoidance).

Tip #2: Don’t Forget About In-Office Visits

It’s extremely important that you remember to bring your child in to see us for a preventive visit (which includes a dental exam and a dental cleaning) every six months or as we suggest. These visits provide the professional removal of plaque and tartar – and they allow us to keep up with any changes occurring in your child’s smile. As a result, maintaining optimal oral health is simple.

Tip #3: Take Pediatric Treatments To Heart

Have we mentioned that we think your child is a wonderful candidate for dental sealants or fluoride treatment? Keep in mind that while your child certainly is special, these are preventive care treatments we suggest to protect the oral health of almost every pediatric patient. Why? Sealants create a solid barrier to keep bacteria and food off of chewing surfaces and fluoride strengthens and remineralizes teeth. The result: Fewer instances of tooth decay.
