Dealing with the symptoms of TMJ disorder (TMD) can result in extraordinary frustration. This is particularly true when you are dealing with the discomfort but are not sure why it’s occurring. The problem begins with your jaw joints – or your temporomandibular joints (TMJs) – which provide motion to your lower jaw. The joints are located on either side of your head. Without this ability to move your jaw up and down and from side to side, you would not be able to sing, talk, or chew. If you have been experiencing some discomfort in your jaw (or the surrounding area) it’s time to learn more about TMD.

About TMJ Disorder

TMJ disorder is a problem that occurs when your TMJs stop functioning as well as they should. We cannot offer a particular reason that this happens to patients because there is not a single cause. Instead, there are multiple factors that may contribute to this lack of optimal functioning. For instance, a strong impact may damage your TMJs. You may strain your jaw joints by tensing up your muscles and grinding your teeth every day. Or your teeth may not be aligned properly, resulting in TMJ strain and eventual TMJ disorder.

Common Symptoms

While you may sense that something is off, it is important to gain a familiarity with TMJ disorder symptoms. By refining your knowledge, you may have a better ability to pinpoint whether TMD or another issue is causing your daily concerns, such as chronic headaches. Additional symptoms include:

  • A popping jaw
  • A clicking jaw
  • A jaw that becomes stuck for a moment when you are trying to open or close your mouth
  • Soreness or pain in your TMJs or radiating outward from them
  • Shoulder and neck pain
