Toothaches: What You Should (And Shouldn’t) Listen To

When you have a toothache, where do you turn? Do you start thinking very hard about how you should respond, what it means, and what might happen? Do you call your mom, friend, aunt, or favorite cousin? Or, do you contact us immediately to set up a visit? For some quick, helpful guidance, consider who you should (and should not) listen to along the way.

You Shouldn’t Listen To…

You should not give in to the part of your brain that comes up with crazy ideas about reasons you should wait to call us, things you can try to do at home to alleviate your toothache and fix the problem, or other outlandish ideas. We know it’s hard to ignore this voice sometimes because it sounds reasonable and it gives you tons of seemingly acceptable reasons that you don’t have to schedule a visit. However, these are not actually acceptable reasons.

You Should Definitely Not Listen To…

Things other people tell you (unless they are dentists). Your friend might tell you something far-fetched, such as that her friend’s cousin had a minor toothache one time and ended up needing three root canal treatments, an extraction, one dental implant, and then braces (don’t worry, we made this up, it’s not a true story!). Don’t listen to people’s horror stories; while there may be a tiny drop of truth to them, they are generally sensationalized and can scare you instead of helping you get to our practice to treat your toothache!

You Should Only Listen To…

Us, of course! Our instruction for you, should a toothache occur, is to call us to tell us what’s happening, so we can schedule your appointment as quickly as possible. If there’s anything that requires treatment, we’ll have your smile good as new in no time.
