While it may seem counterproductive at first, a dental is sometimes necessary to ensure the overall health and comfort of your smile. At Dental Associates of Corona, our team can perform a comfortable tooth removal and then discuss your tooth replacement options. Today, we look at a few common situations in which a patient requires extraction.

Wisdom Teeth and Infection

One of the more common reasons for removing a tooth involves the wisdom teeth. Also known as third molars, these teeth arrive when a patient is in his/her late teens or early twenties. While the mouth comfortably accommodates 28 teeth, the eruption of the third molars forces in an additional 4. Soon, patients can develop:

  • Toothaches
  • Infection
  • Impaction
  • Cracked or chipped teeth

Our dentists will exam your smile with the use of digital x-ray technology and decide whether your wisdom teeth will require extraction. If so, we will perform this procedure early on to avoid the negative consequences of your third molars’ arrival.

Another common reason for removal is a dental infection. When bacteria reach the inner pulp, usually as a result a dental damage or advanced tooth decay, an infection can start. The pulp is a bundle of living nerve tissue that keeps our teeth alive and healthy. Once infected, the pulp can eventually die. To keep the infection from spreading to other teeth or the jawbone, we will remove the tooth. You can replace this lost tooth with a dental bridge or dental implant.

Undergoing an Extraction

First, we will numb the area with a local anesthetic, ensuring you feel comfortable throughout the procedure. The dentist will then loosen the supporting ligaments and with a pair of dental forceps, remove the tooth in question. The area may then be sutured or you will simply bite down in a piece of gauze until a blood clot forms. We can then provide detailed aftercare instruction.
