Dental Anxiety

Calming Anxious Patients with Dental Sedation

We find that people tend to fear the dentist for one of two main reasons. First, they may have had poor experiences in past visits. The second, and more common reason, is simply a lack of experience. When we don’t see the dentist often, we can easily develop a major case of anxiety, which could prevent us from obtaining the care needed to maintain optimal oral health. Fortunately, at Riverside Dental Group at Woodcrest, our team is certified in oral sedation, and knows how to ease dental fears with sedation dentistry.

The Sedation Process

The option we recommend will depend on a number of factors, including your level of anxiety and your medical history. We will take time to discuss your concerns and address your questions in detail. Sedation can help you undergo minor checkups and cleanings, cosmetic treatments like veneers or bonding, and even advanced procedures, such as dental implant placement. We offer two options: nitrous oxide and oral sedation.

Nitrous Oxide

We administer nitrous oxide, commonly referred to as laughing gas, through a mask placed over the nose. Patients inhale the gas and enter a very relaxed state, with little to no memory of the procedure. They will still be conscious, and able to respond to the dentist. The effects wear off immediately, so you will be able to return to work or school!

Oral Sedation

For a deeper form of relaxation, we may suggest oral sedation. People take a medication the morning of the procedure, and enter a very deep state of calm. Again, they will be conscious and able to respond to the dentist, but will have little to no memory of the procedure itself. The effects will take time to wear off, so you may need to arrange for a friend or family member to take you home.
