As you may have noticed this summer, heading out on a day trip is an exciting way to enjoy your time without committing to the serious planning required of a true vacation. What you may have also noticed is that though you were only at the zoo, water park, historic site, or otherwise for a daylong outing, it still pays to plan out your dental hygiene ahead of time. Since this is often an afterthought and can feel a little confusing (after all, you were only planning on being away from home for a few hours!), your Riverside dentist has some suggestions for protecting your oral health, even during brief stints away from home.

Carry Water

If you have the option to carry liquid with you, so you can remain hydrated, your Riverside dentist suggests you choose water. Not only is this the best option for keeping yourself from becoming dehydrated but it is also the best option for your oral health. It helps you avoid dry mouth, rinses bacteria from your mouth, helps dislodge food particles after eating, and won’t cause stains or acid (since it is neutral).

Pack A Pouch

It’s easy to carry your dental hygiene instruments along with you. For easy access when you need to brush, keep a small travel brush, a travel-size paste, and travel floss on hand. Pack it in a plastic zipper bag, toss it into your tote (or your pocket if it fits) and you’re ready!

Pick Up Sugarless Gum

Out with the family and you aren’t too interested in carrying four travel size toothbrushes with you? No problem. Your Riverside dentist recommends you reach for a pack of sugarless gum instead. After everyone eats and drinks their water, hand out the gum! It will protect oral health by removing some plaque and food (which is aided in part by increased salivation that helps keep mouths healthy).
